Linger Not, Lingering Lot

Sep 6, 2026    Pastor Jeff Smith

There are times when haste is foolish, but there are also times when delay is dangerous. Judgment was about to fall upon Sodom, the angels were urging Lot to escape, and yet Genesis 19:16 says, “while he lingered.”

In this sermon, Pastor Jeff Smith examines three reasons we delay when God tells us to move with haste:

Failure can cause us to linger.

The flesh can cause us to linger.

Fear can cause us to linger.

Lot’s failure weakened his testimony, his flesh resisted leaving what was familiar, and his fear caused him to question God’s appointed place of safety. His delayed obedience brought serious consequences to his household. Nevertheless, the Lord was merciful, took Lot by the hand, and delivered him from destruction.

Whatever failure, fleshly attachment, or fear is preventing you from obeying God, do not allow yesterday’s mistakes or tomorrow’s uncertainties to keep you from following him today. The Lord knows how to deliver, but when God commands us to move, we must not linger.
