Text: Joshua 5:1–9
Before Israel conquered Jericho, they first stopped at Gilgal. There, God commanded Joshua to circumcise the new generation of Israelites, renewing His covenant with His people and rolling away the reproach of Egypt.
Why did God require this before the first battle in Canaan?
This message explores the spiritual significance of Gilgal and how it pictures the believer's salvation, sanctification, and preparation for the Christian life. Just as Israel needed to deal with unfinished spiritual business before moving forward, believers today must allow God to work in their hearts before experiencing victory.
In this message, we will examine:
• The Reaching – Joshua 5:1
• The Reasoning – Joshua 5:2–6
• The Raising – Joshua 5:7
• The Recovering – Joshua 5:8
• The Rolling – Joshua 5:9
Additional Scriptures:
Genesis 17:9–14; Numbers 13–14; Proverbs 22:6; Proverbs 20:30; Romans 5:12; Colossians 2:11–12; Hebrews 4:12; Ephesians 6:4
Gilgal was more than Israel's first campsite in the Promised Land; it became the place where God addressed unfinished spiritual business before leading his people into future victories. Through the circumcision of the new generation, God renewed his covenant, rolled away the reproach of Egypt, and prepared Israel for what lay ahead.
This message examines the rich spiritual imagery in Joshua 5 and how it points to the believer's salvation, sanctification, and preparation for Christian service.
May this study encourage you to let God remove the reproach of the past and prepare you for the victories He has planned ahead.
