Put Your Trust in the LORD
Put Your Trust in the LORD
Text: 1 Chronicles 5:20
The world teaches us to trust ourselves. Scripture teaches us to trust the Lord.
First Chronicles 5 records an impressive army of 44,760 trained warriors. They were courageous men equipped with bows, swords, and shields. From every human perspective, they appeared ready for battle. Yet when the fighting began, they discovered that military preparation alone would not secure victory. Their success came because "they cried to God in the battle" and "put their trust in him."
This passage reminds us that God never intended His people to live independently of him. Every battle, whether physical, emotional, financial, or spiritual, should drive us to our knees before it drives us to our own resources. Prayer is not a last resort; it is the believer's greatest weapon.
Notice the progression in the chapter. They cried unto God. They earnestly sought Him. God answered. He intervened in the battle and gave them victory. Scripture even declares that "the war was of God." Their triumph belonged to the Lord because they depended upon Him rather than themselves.
After the battle, however, the story takes a tragic turn. Prosperity produced pride. Success led to spiritual compromise. The very people whom God had delivered eventually committed idolatry and abandoned the LORD who had fought for them. The LORD, who once defended his people, eventually allowed judgment to come because they forsook Him.
How often does this happen in our own lives? During hardship, we pray fervently, but after blessing arrives, our dependence quietly fades. We begin trusting our experience, our resources, our abilities, or our accomplishments instead of the God who provided them.
Trusting God is not merely how we begin the Christian life; it is how we continue living it every day. Every answered prayer should deepen our dependence, not diminish it.
Whatever battle you are facing today, remember the lesson of 1 Chronicles 5. Cry unto God. Seek Him earnestly. Place your trust completely in him. Then, after he gives the victory, continue walking humbly with Christ, who fought the battle on your behalf.
Victory belongs to the Lord, and so does every heart safely truly trusts in him.
